Betting on Horses

If you are one of the people who are trying to make a profit betting on horse races, then you are probably also using some kind of system to handicap the races. It may not be a formal system that you bought from someone else, it may just be your own method that has evolved over time. Whatever the case may be, you have probably prioritized your key factors and start evaluating the races using one or two key pieces of information.

For instance, if you use speed figures a lot and consider speed the key factor, you may start by trying to find a certain situation with a disparity in speed figures. Or perhaps you look for a class drop and speed figures combined. The point is, no matter how you handicap, most of us find keys that we use to evaluate a race.

There are keys to races and keys to success and often they are similar. One of the keys to success as a handicapper is information. I would say it is the top and most important key. Information comes in many varieties and each part of handicapping needs its own specialized source of information.

In the case mentioned above, a good source of speed figures is a must. You may experiment with different providers and find one that you think is the most reliable and also reasonably priced. The next source of information that is key to your success is the feedback you provide for yourself in the form of tracking your bets. If you don’t know how much you have won or loss or what you bet on and why, then how can you ever improve? Therefore, without a doubt, knowing where to get information and how to use it is the first key to handicapping success.

The second key is money management. If you are serious about making money on horse bets you better approach it as a business. You have to have a realistic picture and plan for your resources and possibilities. You need to know how much you can expect to make with the amount of money you are investing. I don’t care how good you are at picking winners, no money management means no money. I have said it before but it bears repeating, good money management will get you through times of bad handicapping better than good handicapping will get you through times of bad money management. Ponder that for a while.

The third most important key in your horse racing handicapping success is how well you manage you. If you are sloppy in your habits, it will mean it is more difficult to succeed because you will spend more time looking for things you’ve misplaced or lost. That is time that could have been spent handicapping. Emotions have ruined more handicappers than any other single factor. If you get emotional and start thinking the universe is working against you, then you will lose. It isn’t the universe that is doing it, though, it is you. If you go on tilt, leave the track and stop betting.

So if you want to make money betting on horses, keep those three keys to handicapping success in mind and of course, as always, enjoy your days at the races.
